It’s been nearly six decades since Edie Sedgwick, the “It Girl” from the swinging ’60s, was a rising star in the Andy Warhol universe.
To this day, Edie’s signature look re-emerges regularly, especially this time of year at chic Halloween costume parties, as more women become inspired to recreate her iconic look.
The short white/blonde hair. Dark, dramatic eye makeup. Mini skirts, black tights and ballet flats. The beauty mark mid-cheek. And, of course, fabulous big, bold jewelry. Edie always wore long, dangling earrings (called shoulder-dusters because they touched the top of her shoulders) that swayed gracefully as she moved.
This was the height of 60s style. That was Edie.
You can find all of the Edie Sedgwick dangling earrings, including her famous Butterfly Dangle earrings, at Steve Sasco Designs, featuring the Factory Girl Collection from the movie of the same name, based on Edie Sedgwick’s life as a socialite, starring Sienna Miller as Edie.
Steve Sasco Designs was the exclusive jewelry designer for the movie, and created all the earrings Sienna Miller wore in the movie.
Just one look at all of these amazing earrings from the collection and you can almost see Andy Warhol’s Factory regulars – Bob Dylan, Lou Reed and Betsey Johnson – entering the room.
After all, it is Halloween, and anything can happen!
From the moment I saw this earring on Edie Sedgwick in the 1970’s, I knew I wanted to recreate it. Edie made this earring iconic wearing it in famous Andy Warhol photo, coming up from the man-hole cover in NYC.
When I made this earring for the movie Factory Girl, my first generation sample was made of casted white metal. It proved too heavy. It was used in the movie that way , but if I was going to sell this earring to the public, I knew I needed to make it lighter.
I used a process called Photo -etching. I drew a sketch of the design and a picture of Edie and took it to a company in Rhode Island. They produced thin sheets of brass in any design. In about 2 weeks I had my sample. It was everything I wanted, Light dangly and loads of detail.
