The origins of the Edie Sedgwick Butterfly Earrings
From the moment I saw this earring on Edie Sedgwick in the 1970’s, I knew I wanted to recreate it. Edie made this earring iconic wearing it in famous Andy Warhol photo, coming up from the man-hole cover in NYC.
When I made this earring for the movie Factory Girl, my first generation sample was made of casted white metal. It proved too heavy. It was used in the movie that way , but if I was going to sell this earring to the public, I knew I needed to make it lighter.
I used a process called Photo -etching. I drew a sketch of the design and a picture of Edie and took it to a company in Rhode Island. They produced thin sheets of brass in any design. In about 2 weeks I had my sample. It was everything I wanted, Light dangly and loads of detail.
